PRP Injection Therapy Q & A

What is PRP injection therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a substance found naturally in your blood that plays an important role in your body’s healing ability.

PRP contains essential growth factors that reduce inflammation and heal soft tissue injuries more efficiently. Injections of PRP also stimulate your body to produce new, healthy cells to replace those damaged by injuries and disease.

Dr. Olson can recommend PRP injection therapy to help you recover faster from soft tissue injuries than you might on your own. He uses PRP, also known as plasma-rich protein, to support soft tissue healing, so you can avoid more invasive treatments like surgery.

What conditions can PRP injection therapy treat?

PRP injection therapy is a minimally invasive treatment option that Dr. Olson can use to treat persistent inflammation and pain in your knee, shoulder, and other areas of your body.

He may recommend this advanced, nonsurgical treatment to heal painful conditions that develop as you age or due to injuries from falls, sports, or auto accidents, including:

  • Sprains
  • Bursitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Tendon tears
  • Ligament tears
  • Muscle tears
  • Cartilage tears/degeneration

Depending on the nature of your injury, Dr. Olson may use PRP therapy as your only treatment, or he may use PRP injections in conjunction with other regenerative therapies or chiropractic care.

What is involved in PRP injection therapy?

During your appointment for PRP injection therapy, Dr. Olson draws a sample of your blood to extract the PRP he needs for your treatment. He prepares the sample in a centrifuge, a device that quickly spins your blood to separate PRP from other materials.

The resulting high concentration of PRP is what Dr. Olson injects into your soft tissues. He may administer multiple injections into damaged muscles or ligaments to expedite your natural healing processes.

To ensure the injection goes directly into the area of injury, Dr. Olson uses high-level guided imaging technology to position the needle in your soft tissue.

After treatment, you can return to your usual activities without limitations. Over time, PRP stimulates your body to produce new healthy cells to repair tissues and reduce inflammation.

As your tissues heal, you should notice a reduction in your pain and other symptoms. Many people also enjoy an increased range of motion in the treated muscles and other soft tissues months after PRP injections.
