Arthritis Q & A

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a degenerative disease that affects your joints. There are more than 100 types of arthritis, but the most common forms of the disease that cause joint pain and disability include:

Gout

Gout develops due to high levels of uric acid in the blood. The uric acid can crystallize and form sharp edges. These edges most often stab at the joint of your big toe, causing persistent swelling and pain.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis develops when the protective cartilage that lines the ends of your bones wears away, allowing the bones of your joints to rub together, causing friction, inflammation, and pain.

Inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis

Inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes chronic inflammation and pain in the joints. This type of arthritis can cause joint deformities if left untreated.

You can develop arthritis in any of the joints in your body, but the disease is especially common in your feet, knees, shoulders, hips, elbows, and hands.

When should I seek treatment for arthritis?

You should schedule an evaluation at Dr Olson Health if you’re no longer able to treat the joint swelling or pain that arthritis causes with over-the-counter medications and rest. You also need an evaluation if your joint pain worsens, even with treatment.

Dr. Olson offers comprehensive joint evaluations to assess your joint mobility. He may also order X-rays, bloodwork, and other diagnostic tests to determine what kind of arthritis you have.

Based on the testing results, Dr. Olson customizes a treatment plan that focuses on relieving your joint pain and preventing joint deformities and other complications that arthritis can cause.

How does chiropractic care treat arthritis pain?

The chiropractic services available at Dr Olson Health can be highly effective at relieving your pain and improving the range of motion in your joints.

In addition to manual adjustments of your spine and individual joints, Dr. Olson may also recommend nutritional supplements.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and human cellular tissue products (HCT/P) are also available to treat arthritis pain and inflammation. These regenerative therapies stimulate your body to create new, healthy cells to replace damaged cells in your joint structures.

As new cells grow over time, they support the efficient healing of your muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues to ease pain and improve your joint’s range of motion.

You also may need to make lifestyle and diet changes to achieve a healthy body weight and take unnecessary pressure off painful, swollen joints.

Don’t be limited by chronic joint pain any longer. Call Dr Olson Health today to schedule a diagnostic evaluation for arthritis or book an appointment online.
